
The quarterfinals of the Volvo World Match Play Championship being played at the spectacular resort course of Finca Cortesín Golf Hotel, Golf & Spa, will continue to speak Spanish. Sergio García, Álvaro Quirós and Rafael Cabrera-Bello have overcome their rivals this morning in the round of 16 and this afternoon they will play the quarterfinals. Sergio defeated the Englishman Tom Lewis by 4&3, Álvaro did the same with the tournament favorite, the defending champion, the Englishman Ian Poulter, whom he also beat by 4&3, and Rafael, in the closest and most exciting match in its final stretch, beat the Swede Robert Karlsson on the last hole of Finca Cortesín by holing a birdie. Two major winners, Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell and Scotland’s Paul Lawrie, who beat England’s Richard Finch (3&2) and Sweden’s Thomas Björn (5&4) respectively in the morning, will also play in the quarterfinals this afternoon. South African Retief Goosen beat British Robert Rock by 3&2, Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts beat English Justin Rose by 4&3, and American Brandt Snedeker beat Colombian Camilo Villegas by 3&2.
The pairings for this afternoon’s quarterfinals, which guarantee at least one Spaniard (Quirós or Cabrera-Bello, who face each other) a place in the semifinals, are as follows:
