It is not the $210,000 that was paid for a golf lesson given by Tiger Woods to raise funds for those affected in Houston by Hurricane Harvey in 2017, but the $22,784.40 for which a putter used by Tiger Woods has sold is certainly not pecata minuta. Although in any case, the person who won it did so at a very good price, almost a bargain, considering that in the last three years other putters of Tiger’s that had never been used in tournaments had been sold for $60,000 and $44,000.
That’s partly why the Scotty Cameron Newport Xperimental TeI3 prototype Tiger’s Scotty Cameron Newport Xperimental TeI3 that recently sold at auction is so significant.
According to the Green Jacket Auctions auction house description, Woods not only used the putter, called the Scotty Cameron Newport Xperimental TeI3, but also that club was the prototype version that preceded the Newport TeI3 of his historic 1997 Masters victory.
Previously, the putter belonged to Randy Peterson, Callaway’s director of fitting and instruction, who frequently played golf with Woods, who gifted the putter to him prior to the 1997 season.
“This putter was a prototype,” the auction house description stated. “Tiger obtained a new Scotty Cameron putter that he would use to win the 1997 Masters by 12 strokes.”
Two curiosities about Woods’ Xperimental TeI3: it has the name “Tiger” stamped on the clubhead, and the last five digits of the putter’s certificate of authenticity (84437) spell out the word “Tiger” on the telephone keypad.
