Banco Santander’s commitment to women’s professional golf is winning. Virginia Martínez de Munguía Embarba, Director of Sponsorships of the bank, is very satisfied with the results that the Santander Golf Tour is having so far.
-We were used to the presence of Banco Santander as a sponsor in amateur tournaments. What are the reasons that led you to opt for a national women’s professional circuit?
-Fundamentally because it is part of our own sponsorship strategy that we have started this year. Everyone knows and knows what our main sponsorship is, Formula 1, but in a way the Bank wants to project its vision, which is to help people and companies to prosper, and how we are able to transfer this concept to people’s daily lives. So we are focusing on one hand on popular sports, running, triathlon and cycling, and on the other hand on women’s sports. That is why we are sponsoring the Women’s Race and, above all, we are supporting women’s golf, and in this case, women’s professional golf, because women players have little support and it is very difficult for them to compete. In fact, there would be no circuit of this type in Spain if it were not for our sponsorship. Thanks to this, they can play in various types of courses and in this way train in order to be able to compete at an international level. We believe that this support fits perfectly with our strategy, and we did not hesitate at all when the opportunity of this sponsorship appeared.
-It is an important qualitative leap in terms of sponsorship: from amateur golf to professional golf?
-Indeed, we try to give differential things also to our own customers. There are some pro-ams prior to the professional competitions, and in them our guests play with a professional. This is an absolutely differential value offer. On the one hand, and on the other hand, it is a much more attractive competition for any amateur. The Bank has been sponsoring amateur tournaments for a long time, but it is very different when you play with a professional. Our own clients tell us that, and they are delighted and tell us: “This is amazing”. They are also charming when it comes to playing with our guests, who also learn a lot from them and their way of doing things.
-Are you satisfied with how the Circuit is going so far?
-We are very happy, to be honest. We still have half of it left – after the summer we will resume it in Barcelona – but we are very satisfied with how it is going so far.
