Want to be an efficient golfer: get in shape with Jésica Reyes

Players, both amateurs and professionals, in order to achieve an efficient swing, must work and develop several physical qualities, in addition to work outside the gym (technical and psychological training).

Unlike what many believe, these require a very complete development in terms of the different motor skills, since this sport requires not only strength, power, stability and swing speed, but also mobility, flexibility, endurance and skill, all of which are of vital importance not only in terms of performance but also when it comes to preventing injuries. Therefore, it is essential to enhance them according to the needs and possibilities of each player.

On the other hand, one of the disadvantages that physical trainers encounter when planning is the lack of time of the player, whether amateur or professional (in the latter case, many tournaments, travel, technical training, psychological…), so we do not have enough time to work “specifically” on each ability. That is why we must look for practical and efficient tools that are sustainable over time.

A strategy that could facilitate the process is to work on several skills in the same session, always starting with an activation (mobility) and then selecting the exercises according to the characteristics and objectives of each player.

An example of this could be exercises that include strength, mobility, flexibility and stability work (all at the same time), such as the ones we will see below:

Lunges plus torso rotation: get into lunges position with a weighted disc in your hands and elbows slightly bent. From that position descend while rotating the torso (forward leg side) keeping the head in front. Both legs.

Exercise 2. Dynamic bottoms with sliding platform (slider): Get into a bottom position with a slider on one foot, take a weight and hold it close to the chest, from that position slide the leg backwards and return to the initial position. Ditto other side.

Exercise 3. Side squat with sliding platform: Place the platform on one side, take a weight (depending on the player), and from that position perform a side squat to one side. Repeat on the other side.
