
Celia Barquín Arozamena, recent winner of the European Absolute Amateur Championship and Iowa State University’s Athlete of the Year, has been killed in the United States.
Born in Santander on April 8, 1995, just 23 years old, Celia Barquín was found dead on a golf course in Coldwater, in the town of Ames, Iowa. in the town of Ames, in the state of Iowa.
Local police have announced that a 22-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder following an investigation by several officers, who were called to the aforementioned golf course after a group of players located a golf bag with no one around it.
Police found Celia Barquín’s body “at some distance”, determining that she had been assaulted, although the cause of death has not yet been determined.
The Spanish golfer, a regular member of the Spanish national teams, continued her athletic and academic career at Iowa State University (Civil Engineering) after training in Spain.
Runner-up in the Spanish Junior Championship in 2006 and Spanish Junior Champion in 2010, Celia Barquín entered the Blume National Golf School in the 2012-2013 promotion, previously endorsed by her first two international victories at the Grand Prix of Chiberta in 2011 and 2012, a victory she repeated in 2013.
An outstanding team player, where she contributed her undoubted quality at all times, Celia Barquín contributed to winning the bronze and silver medals at the 2015 and 2016 European Absolute Women’s Team Championships, a prelude to her great individual success, concretized last July 28, 2018, when she was proclaimed brilliant individual European champion.
In the Slovakian course of Penati Golf Club, she won with great brilliance over all her rivals, winning a title that had previously swelled the Spanish list of winners thanks to Carlota Ciganda (2004 and 208), Belén Mozo (2006), Luna Sobrón (2014), María Parra (2015).
