Shortly after crossing the barrier of a thousand days to start play in this competition, the Solheim Cup 2023 receives another decisive boost after being declared an event of exceptional public interest by the Government of Spain, a designation recently published in the BOE of December 31, 2020, which includes the Law 11/2020 of the General State Budget.
This competition, which pits teams from the United States and Europe against each other every two years and will be held for the first time in our country in 2023 at the Finca Cortesín course, already has a notable business and institutional backing as it is sponsored by PING, Costa del Sol and Rolex as global partners; and by Andalucía, Acosol, the Marbella Town Hall and the Benahavís Town Hall as official partners. Its designation as an event of exceptional public interest, which it will enjoy for the next three years, notably reinforces its attractiveness, since the companies and institutions sponsoring the competition will be able to obtain a maximum tax deduction of up to 90% of their investments, which is a considerable tax incentive in addition to the other benefits of sponsoring an event of such magnitude.
It is also the first women’s golf event to be considered an event of exceptional public interest, a distinction that highlights the importance of this competition on the international scene.
Íñigo Aramburu, general director of Sport & Business, emphasized the social driving force of an event like the Solheim Cup.
“We welcome with joy and gratitude to the parties involved the fair designation of the Solheim Cup as an event of exceptional public interest, an essential piece that will contribute to the success of a project that will leave its mark on Spanish society and contribute to its recovery after the difficulties we have been experiencing in recent times. Women’s golf is an ideal tool for transmitting the best values, and the recently approved tax incentives are a magnificent incentive for companies and entities interested in supporting this great tournament to see their efforts rewarded and become involved in a unique project”.
The 2023 Solheim Cup joins the list of top-notch events with such designation, such as “Andalusia, European Region of Sport 2021”, “Barcelona Mobile World Capital”, “Valencia, World Design Capital 2022”, or the “Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters” among others. It is clear the opportunity offered by the Solheim Cup to present Spain, Andalusia and the Costa del Sol (with municipalities such as Marbella, Benahavís and Casares at the forefront) as a safe tourist destination, while supporting women’s sport in a sustainable event of great international relevance.
The inaugural Solheim Cup was played in Florida in 1990 and is named after Karsten and Louise Solheim, founders of Karsten Manufacturing Corporation, the company that markets the PING brand of golf equipment. The Solheim Cup features two teams of twelve players defending the colors of Europe and the United States in three days of competition played in the same format as the Ryder Cup.
The Solheim Cup 2023, whose official venue is Finca Cortesín, is sponsored by PING, Costa del Sol and Rolex as global partners; and by Andalucía, Acosol, Ayuntamiento de Marbella and Ayuntamiento de Benahavís as official partners. Solán de Cabras, Eversheds Sutherland Nicea and the Casares Town Hall are official suppliers. Marca and Radio Marca are official media. The LET, the LPGA Tour, the RFEG and Deporte and Business collaborate in its organization.
