40,000 is paid for a replica of the British Open trophy won by Gary Player in 1968.

The legendary Gary Player has donated the replica of his Claret Jug from the 1968 British Open to a charity auction. The aim was to raise funds to support his charity, the Player Foundation.
The South African player, who amassed 24 PGA Tour victories, won the aforementioned major three times in his career, the others being in 1959 and 1974.
The Claret Jug is the trophy awarded to the winner of the British Open. The first was awarded to Walter Hagen in 1928 and winners, although they must return it to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club before the next year’s tournament, receive a replica of the trophy to keep.
The replica trophy won by Player in 1968 sold at auction for $40,000.
The auction was part of the Gary Player Invitation at the GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford, New York. The event raised $114,000 for the Player Foundation, which helps underprivileged children and communities around the world.
“Of all the things I have accomplished in my life and career, I am most proud of the impact the Player Foundation has had on people in need,” Player said. “From ensuring a proper education for underserved youth to helping communities in need, my Foundation continues to be the driving force behind everything I do,” he said.
