1,000 fine for hitting 76-year-old player on the field

And there are those who maintain that golf is not a dangerous sport. Just tell that to the 76-year-old man who was hit by a golfer playing another game during a round of golf in Queensland, Australia.

The victim, Brian Lynch, told the court hearing that he had lost his ball and had approached the other player, named David Peter Moriarty, 47, to see if he had caught it.

He checked that it wasn’t his and stood next to Moriarty, who was apparently annoyed that Lynch ‘invaded’ his space. There was an argument and the old man said he did not remember how Moriarty hit him because he did not expect the attack.

Witnesses to the assault said they saw the two men arguing heatedly before physical contact. Another player who witnessed the scene claimed that Moriarty punched at least twice the victim, whose injuries included bruises and cuts to his face.

The prosecutor said a blow to the head could have ended the victim’s life and requested that the assailant pay the victim $1,000 compensation and $150 to each witness who attended the court hearing.

Moriarty’s defense attorney said that a sentence against his client would be very detrimental because it would cause him many problems when it comes to finding work in his sector, the merchant marine.

Both protagonists are banned from the club where the incident took place, although the victim said he had voluntarily withdrawn from the club and joined another club.

The judge has requested further documentation, so the sentence has not yet been issued.
