With a dream finish and a round of 66 strokes, Ana Pelaez has been proclaimed champion of the Santander Golf Tour Madrid, fourth round of the circuit that has been played at Golf Santander (Boadilla del Monte). The Malaga, who signed six under par on the final day, had to get the best version of his putt to save the par on the 17th hole and start the birdie on the 18th to achieve victory and thus obtain his most important victory to date. Behind, Madrid amateur Carolina Lopez-Chacarra was just one stroke behind the winner, despite a great final round of 69 strokes. Both were the only ones who managed to go under 70 strokes on the final day.
Although the wind blew with less intensity than in the previous days, the course of Golf Santander acted as a judge, as if it were a match play, between Ana Pelaez and Carolina Lopez-Chacarra. The Malaga-born player had to save par on the 17th hole with a two-meter putt, which allowed her to go to the 18th with a one-stroke lead. The excitement continued to grow and Lopez-Chacarra tied the lead with a birdie on the last hole, forcing Pelaez to holing her birdie putt of more than two meters to take the victory. Finally, the amateur from Malaga achieved her first victory in a professional tournament.
“At the beginning I went out very calm, then it was a roller coaster because we were alternating a lot in the lead. When I saw that at the end only Carolina and I were at the top, I took it as a match play. I was very excited because we were two amateurs fighting for first place,” said Pelaez.
“I think the news has been able to make today has achieved such a good result, it is certainly one of the best weeks of my life. The first tournament I win as a professional and on top of that as an amateur is, of course, something to be very happy and proud of” concluded the player from Malaga after learning that she has received an invitation to the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España to be held at the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina from November 26th to 29th.
Behind, the hits and misses were causing big changes in the standings. Spain’s Marta Martín and Marta Muñoz managed to finish third thanks to two rounds of minus two under par. France’s Astrid Vayson de Pradenne, Madrid’s Marta Sanz Barrio and Finland’s Tiia Koivisto finished in fifth position with a total of minus one.
The next Santander Golf Tour event will be at Oliva Nova Golf with the Santander Spanish Professional Championship, which will close the 2020 season of the circuit sponsored by Banco Santander.
