The LET Aramco Team Series is proving to be a ‘green’ tournament in every way by recycling all the plastic waste generated over the four weekends of the tournament into sustainable clothing for the organization’s staff.
The innovative new tournament is demonstrating that it is not only focused on inspiring and inspiring the next generation of female golfers, but also on how it can become a zero-emissions event and thus eliminate the carbon footprint generated by hosting four major LET events in four different countries.
One way is through the tournament’s partnership with sustainable fashion company REBORN. Born in London, REBORN collects used plastics – from plastic bags to golf tees – and uses its own waste treatment system to convert plastic waste into small particles. These particles can be used to make everything from T-shirts and polo shirts to jeans, jackets or hats.
Working with the Aramco Team Series, the REBORN team – led by founder Zak Johnson – anticipates before each event the amount of plastics that will be generated over the course of the weekend, from the water bottles on the circuit to the suppliers’ packaging. With this, the company plans the next tournament in the series by calculating exactly how many garments they will be able to produce from the waste generated.
Right now, the Aramco Team Series – Sotogrande, is being held on the southern coast of Spain, just over a month after the London leg. As such, the staff working on the tournament and the amateur players taking part in the innovative new format of the Aramco Team Series are wearing no less than 1,200 polo shirts, all made from plastic waste collected in London just four weeks ago: 19,200 bottles, amounting to 307 kg of plastic.
“It may seem like a lot for such a short time frame, but it’s an example of what we do and what we’re capable of achieving,” said Johnson, whose goal with REBORN is simple: to work toward a world where the clothes you love to wear protect the world you love.
All the plastic collected at the Aramco Team Series – London has been reused to make the clothing worn by the tournament staff in Sotogrande”. He continued: “The way we are going now, the planet and our situation is not going to be good in 10-15 years’ time. Taking steps like this to recycle plastics wherever and however possible is vitally important for what comes next, and I believe that with REBORN we are leading an industry – the clothing industry, from merchandising to corporate clothing to staff suits.”
It’s great that the Aramco Team Series seeks to mitigate this and many other environmentally damaging actions, so it’s a pleasure for us to work with them in this exciting new era of women’s golf.”
The Aramco Team Series – Sotogrande will be followed by the Aramco Team Series – New York (October 14-16) and the Aramco Team Series – Jeddah (November 10-12), all of which will see event staff dressed in REBORN apparel.
Ahmed Al-Subaey, Aramco’s Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Supply Planning, said, “We have been impressed by what REBORN has done in recent years. It is very much in tune with our own programs, which aim to reduce waste, reuse materials and identify new and more efficient ways to manage resources. Along with reducing emissions and advancing low-carbon energy solutions, we believe this approach is essential for a more sustainable future. Our partnership with REBORN, for the Aramco Team Series, is a further example of this.”
