Azata: Costa del Sol’s new 18-hole course comes into play

The opening of a new golf course is always great news, and the fact that it is on the Costa del Sol, where an 18-hole course has not been opened for almost a decade, is even better. Azata Golf, in the municipality of Estepona, in a privileged location between Marbella and Sotogrande, enhances the wide range of golf courses on the Costa del Sol (more than 70 courses), which has made this stretch of the Andalusian coastline one of the best golf tourist destinations in the world.

It was June 25 when the well-kept and beautiful fairways of Azata Golf began to receive their first visitors, and the impression they have taken of the course could not have been better, according to its director, Agustín Alonso. “I couldn’t be happier, to be honest, because all the comments have been very positive”.

In order to make the new Costa del Sol course known to as many fans as possible, the management has launched attractive opening offers for both green fees and season tickets. “The people who come here will be delighted and I am sure that many of them will come back,” Alonso assures. In fact, there are already a few who have been so satisfied that they have not hesitated to subscribe to the club.

“We open with great enthusiasm,” says the director of Azata Golf, “putting everything on our part to make sure everything is perfect, to offer an attractive course, a fun course to play, and we will not disappoint.”

The course, designed by Sterling and Martin Golf Clourse Architects, is a par 71 with a slightly longer first part and wider fairways than the second part, but it is not without challenges for the player. It is a comfortable layout that can be played on foot, without the need for a buggy.

The greens at Azata Golf are wide and have a lot of slopes.

Water is present in quite a few holes. At the first part of the course, the Arroyo Vaquero river flows next to holes 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, and there is a lake on holes 1 and 5.

Holes 1, 2 and 3 are a little longer, so they are challenging for the big hitters, as is hole 8, where they can reach the green of two, although it is a little more difficult because it is uphill.

The first part of the course is almost entirely with views of the mountains, the Sierra Bermeja, while the second round – downhill and practically flat – offers spectacular panoramic views of the sea. The 10th is a hole that invites you to take a risk to obtain a good reward, a par 4 with all the water in front of it, with the fairway on the right.

The 15th, a par 3 with a green almost on an island, with water both in front and on the left and the river on the right, is one of the emblematic holes of Azata Golf and, for its director, the signature hole of the course without any doubt.

The club is born with a putting green and an approach area, and will soon have a driving range (currently under preparation) in front of the clubhouse.

In terms of prices, Azata Golf will be in the average of the courses in the area, announces its director. In high season the green fee will be 65 euros and in low season, 50 euros. Regarding subscriptions, there will be monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and annual. Subscribers will enjoy special prices on buggy rentals and electric and manual carts, as well as discounts in the store.
