Carlota Ciganda has come close to victory in the grand final of the American LPGA Women’s Tour, the CME Group Tour Championship, which brought together 72 players at the Tiburón Golf Club course (Naples, Florida, United States), including the four Spaniards who are regulars on the circuit.
On the last day, Carlota Ciganda had an intense duel with the very young Australian figure Lydia Ko and the Paraguayan Julieta Granada. The Spaniard signed a good 70 to finish with -10, the same score as her rivals, so she expected a dramatic play-off playoff.
The three golfers played with integrity these extra holes, although Julieta Granada fell behind on the second with a bogey. The issue was therefore between Carlota Ciganda and Lydia Ko. The Spaniard had her best option on the third hole, but missed the birdie. On the fourth hole, a bogey put the Spaniard away from what would have been her first individual victory in the United States.
Meanwhile, Belén Mozo (T20, -1) and Azahara Muñoz (T24, par) also closed the year in an excellent manner.
After the first three rounds, the best news came from Carlota Ciganda, who was second with a total of 208 strokes (-8), one more than Julieta Granada. The Navarrese signed a great 67 (-5) on the second day thanks to five birdies between holes 5 and 13. In the third, a 71 allowed her to face the final 18 holes in a clear position.
The player from Ulzama -who turned professional in June 2011- has three victories on the European Women’s Tour: the Deloitte Ladies Open and the China Suzhou Taihu Open in 2012, and the German Open in 2013. In addition, she was number 1 in the Ladies European Tour Ranking in her debut season and contributed to the European victory in the 2013 Solheim Cup.
In the LPGA she accumulated so far two Top 10 and a magnificent choral triumph in the International Crown 2014, unofficial World Cup in which she won representing Spain together with Azahara Muñoz, Belén Mozo and Beatriz Recari.
