It will be Woods’ 18th time playing in this tournament, which has traditionally marked the start of his year in competition. The former world number one haswon the Farmers Insurante Open seven times, capturing his first title 20 years ago and most recently in 2013. However, in his last four appearances he has failed to place higher than 23rd. He does, however, hold the record for the best-ever 22-under-par victory, which he achieved in 1999. The reigning champion is Jason Day
Woods’ last tournament was the Hero World Challenge in December, when he finished seventeenth among the eighteen players who played in the competition. The Farmers Insurance Open is his first official US PGA Tour tournament since his victory in the Tour Championship last September. It had then been more than five years, exactly five years, one month and two days, since August 4, 2013 when Tiger Woods lifted his last trophy. It was at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, at the TPC Southwind in Memphis (Tennessee), and with seven strokes ahead of his compatriot Keegan Bradley and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson.
