Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño is more than satisfied to have overcome the bad weather to start the BMW PGA with a 68(-4) that puts him provisionally third tied at two strokes behind the leader, James Kingston. Thursday at Wentworth had it all: wind, cold, rain, hail and a storm that forced play to be halted for 90 minutes. That delay has prevented the final five matches from finishing and they will have to get up early tomorrow morning. This will not affect the schedule for the second round.
“The weather today was more reminiscent of the Dunhill Links than the BMW,” said Gonzalo. “Wentworth is not a course I’m particularly good at and the conditions were tricky, but I made a lot of birdies and made some important putts. Anything under par here is always a great round, and with four under I’m more than satisfied.”
A round of seven birdies and three bogeys, well fought and, above all, very well finished with two birdies,”. Leading the tournament is South African James Kingston who turned in a 66(-6) with seven birdies and one bogey just before the adjournment. Kingston, who is playing on an invitation, thanked the European Tour and said he was “delighted to have been able to make the most of the invitation.”
In addition to Fernández-Castaño, Alejandro Cañizares (-3), Álvaro Quirós (-2) and Pablo Larrazábal (-1) beat the field. Sergio García finished with a spectacular eagle to deliver a round of even par.
