Flamingos Hosts Premier AGC Event

The second leg of this year’s fourth edition of the Andalucía Golf Challenge was held on Saturday 30 July at one of Europe’s premier golf resorts, Villa Padierna, home to three 18-hole courses and a five-star hotel.

As in the previous event at Finca Cortesín, 100 players entered this open tournament, enjoying a golf course in magnificent condition and superb weather – albeit slightly hot. More or less what can be expected at the end of July.

The amateur players teeing up at Flamingos Golf (the resort’s first course) represented several different nationalities: Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, British and, of course, Spanish.

The competition was sponsored by iKasa, a Madrid real estate developer that is creating a stunning urbanisation in Estepona; Fairway + Blue, a golf boutique in Puerto Banús; Holiday Golf, the premier distributor of golf products in Spain and Portugal; the Somontono “Original Denomination” wine-producing area; Bodegas Domnecq, who gave all participants 18-and-over a bottle of 2009 Rueda white wine; Hacienda de Montecorto; and TomTom.

The prize-giving ceremony was held in the clubhouse’s beautiful gardens, following a cocktail reception, and was presided over by Andalucía Golf publisher Antonio Sánchez and Gabriela Johne, from Fairway + Blue.

As for the results… the first category winner was Santiago Gutierrez Duque (41 points) followed by Ole Kelsen and Juan Carlos Vara de la Fuente (both 38 points).

Leading the way in category two, with 39 points, was Frank Hinrichsen, while Martin Malone (37 points) was second and Mark Ward (also 37 points) third.

The best player in the tournament, winner of the special scratch prize offered by iKasa, was Elias Azzam (handicap 3.7), who tallied 34 points.

Franky Aegten won the closest to the pin prize; Lulu Pourulis and Gonzalo González Jiménez de la Espada collected the women’s and men’s longest drives prizes, respectively; and the leading women’s player was Helle.

The next Andalucía Golf Challenge events are 19 August at San Roque Old Course and 25 September at Royal Guadalmina Golf Club (South Course). Those wanting to take part should enter directly with the club that is hosting the event.
