The number one golf tourist destination in Europe, the Costa del Sol, places four of its courses among the six best in Spain, according to the ranking established by the website top100golfcourses.co.uk and which is based primarily on the opinion of golfers who have ever played on the courses voted. These are the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, Real Club Valderrama, Finca Cortesin and Real Club Las Brisas, which would occupy respectively the second, third, fifth and sixth places. In this particular ranking of the British website, the first position is for the PGA of Catalonia and the fifth, for El Saler.
Seventh place is occupied by the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla, and there are a total of 27 golf courses in Andalusia ranked among the top 100 in Spain according to the aforementioned website.
It so happens that the four courses mentioned above have hosted major international professional tournaments, with the Real Club Valderrama (in the photo) standing out in this respect, with the Ryder Cup, two American Express World Championships and sixteen Volvo Masters. Finca Cortesín has hosted three editions of the World Match Play Championship, the Real Club de Golf Las Brisas hosted two World Cups (the first was won by Jack Nicklaus and Jonny Miller), three Spanish Opens and a Mediterranean Open, and the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, the 1966 Spanish Open, which was the first major international professional golf event on the Costa del Sol.
Real Club Valderrama, which will host the Open de España from April 14 to 17, is ranked as the number one course in Spain in another important ranking, the one published by Golf Digest at the beginning of the year.
