Francisco de Lancastre returns to Finca Cortesín as General Manager of Golf

Finca Cortesín Hotel, Golf & Spa has turned to an old friend to help it prepare to host the biggest event in its history after appointing Francisco de Lancastre David as the new general manager of Golf and Leisure Operations at the exclusive Costa del Sol resort.

Francisco, who was director of golf at Finca Cortesin for two years, from 2015 to 2017, assumed his new position at the resort that will host the 2023 Solheim Cup in early August.

Francisco has extensive experience in the global golf industry and has worked in a number of high profile roles including, most recently, as General Manager of Troon International’s three golf courses in Abu Dhabi, including the host course for several European Tour and Ladies European Tour tournaments over the past four and a half years.

“I loved working in Abu Dhabi,” he says, “and I met and worked with fantastic people, but the opportunity to return to Spain to a place I know so well was simply too hard to turn down.”

“I have very fond memories of my previous time at Finca Cortesin. It is one of the most prestigious golf venues in Europe and I am relishing the opportunity to play a leadership role in helping the resort prepare for the biggest event in women’s golf and continue to position the resort on the world stage.”

Vicente Rubio, president of Finca Cortesin Golf Club, said: “We are delighted to welcome Francisco back and to have appointed someone of his knowledge and experience. I am sure he will be a great asset to the resort as we begin preparations for the most important event in Finca Cortesin’s history and continue to drive the resort forward in the years to come”.

Spain will become the sixth European country to host the largest team competition in women’s golf when the Solheim Cup is played in Andalusia in two years’ time, with the biennial competition between Europe and the United States taking place from September 18-24, 2023.

Considered one of the best courses in Spain and among the top golf resorts in Europe, Finca Cortesin has a proven track record of hosting high-profile tournaments, including the Volvo World Match Play Championship in 2009, 2011 and 2012, with a star-studded line-up that included Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald.

Set on a vast 215-hectare estate in the hills of southern Spain between Marbella and Sotogrande, Finca Cortesin has a well-earned reputation as one of Europe’s most exclusive modern golf and lifestyle resorts.

Voted the number one resort in Europe by users of the respected Leadingcourses.com website, the resort’s 18-hole championship course was designed by Cabell B. Robinson and is the first venue in Spain to feature a new eco-friendly variety of Bermuda grass on all of its greens.

Complementing the par-72 layout are excellent practice facilities including the Jack Nicklaus Golf Academy at Finca Cortesin, while other luxury resort amenities include an elegant 67-suite hotel; a 6,000-square-meter beach club; an award-winning spa with Spain’s only snow cave; and a choice of four restaurants.
