Golf helps you turn 100

In the month that the forever gone one of the most famous golfers of the 20th century, Arnold Palmer, another ageless enthusiast on the other side of the world, in Australia, celebrated an anniversary that few can emulate and offered some sage advice about life. Phillip Pinnell turned 100 a week before Palmer passed away at 87 and, understandably, he was asked what is the secret to his longevity.

“I love golf…and I love playing good golf,” he told the Messenger newspaper in Adelaide, South Australia. Pinnell started playing golf eight decades ago, when he was a teenager, and now plays at least once a week at Glenelg Golf Course, where he is the club’s oldest member. He said he has been in “pretty good health” most of his life.

A World War II veteran, Pinnel enjoyed  his just-released centennial with a birthday celebration with his family, which includes a 63-year-old daughter who also plays golf and a 68-year-old son, and was later treated to a surprise party by fellow members of the retirement home where he lives.
