Ireland’s Padraig Harrington will captain the European squad in the next edition of golf’s most important team tournament, the Ryder Cup, to be played in September 2020 at the Whistling Straits Golf Course in Wisconsin, USA.
Harrington, a three-time major winner, has been one of Europe’s vice-captains at the last three Ryder Cups and now moves into the top job.
“It is a tremendous honor to be Ryder Cup captain. I will enjoy the next 20 months working towards defending the title at Whistling Straits,” said Harrington. In 2020, the European team will defend the title won last September at Paris’ Le Golf National.
As a player, Harrington made his debut in 1999 and contributed to European victories in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2010, with a total of 10 and a half points in six appearances.
“Since my debut I have played under captains who have been wonderful and I would like to believe that my captaincy will be a mixture of all of them,” explained Harrington, 47.
His appointment as captain of the European Ryder Cup team was promoted by a panel of five experts: the last three captains, Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley; the executive director of the European Tour, Keith Pelley; and the representative of the Tournament Committee of the European Tour, Edoardo Molinari.
