Jiménez: “I have lost 2 million euros with the Andalusia Open”.

Miguel Ángel Jiménez has lost two million euros as the organizer of the last four Open de Andalucía, the official tournament of the European Tour. Only in last year’s edition, the player from Malaga registered losses of 700,000 euros. This was acknowledged by the golfer from Churriana in a meeting he held today with the press at the golf academy that bears his name, located in Torremolinos. Jimenez, who in the first two editions of the tournament did not record losses or profits, said that, if there is no support from sponsors, he will not organize an Andalusian Open again: “I cannot do it anymore, I cannot squander all my life, all my work, when there is no one around to take the baton”.

Jimenez has announced that, after his convalescence and recovery from the knee operation he suffered as a result of his skiing accident last Christmas, he will return to competition during the Spanish Open, to be held at El Saler from April 18 to 21. He will then take a break and compete, this time he believes he will be at one hundred percent of his potential, at the PGA Championship in Wentworth.

The 49-year-old player from Malaga, who holds the record of being the oldest golfer to win a European Tour tournament, also spoke about the electoral process for the election of the new president of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation (RFGA), whose elections were held in July last year and which, due to challenges from one of the candidates, have not yet been resolved, so it is a management board that runs the entity for the time being.

Jiménez has shown his support to one of the candidates, Ángel de la Riva, last president of the RFGA, and has asked the competent bodies for a quick solution to get out of this impasse. He said he did not understand the reason for the challenges: “When there is a unanimous agreement to open some envelopes or to open some ballot boxes and all those present are present, both those on one side and those on the other, the elections must be accepted. You can’t start contesting something because it didn’t go in your favor. For me that is not the right thing to do.
