Ryder Cup stars Martin Kaymer and Thomas Bjørn will return to one of the best courses in continental Europe to take on the challenge of the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters from October 14-17.
Martin Kaymer, who was ranked number one in the world in 2011, has made clear his desire to succeed in a Real Club Valderrama that he always mentions among his favorite courses, while Bjørn made his Ryder Cup debut on this course in 1997 under Seve Ballesteros, starting there a journey that would culminate leading himself to Europe to glory 21 years later.
Kaymer, winner of two majors, finished second in the 2020 edition, just one stroke behind American John Catlin, who will come to defend his title and will meet at the San Roque club with South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout, also winner of the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters.
These four players will join Jon Rahm, world number one, winner of the U.S. Open and two-time Ryder player, and also Rafa Cabrera Bello, a member of the European team in that competition in 2016.
“From the first time I played this course in 2007 I set myself the goal of winning at Valderrama,” said Kaymer. “Coming so close last year has made me even more eager and I’m looking forward to another chance at Sotogrande.”
Bjørn, the most decorated Danish golfer with 15 European Tour victories and three Ryder Cups won as a player, returned to the winner’s circle earlier this year by claiming his first Legends Tour title, the Irish Legends hosted by Paul McGinley. The 2018 European captain is eager to return to Real Club Valderrama once again.
“Valderrama is one of the best courses in Europe and I love coming back,” explained the Dane. “1997 marked the beginning of my incredible relationship with the Ryder Cup and I remember very fondly being part of that team that featured many of my heroes. Every time I go to Valderrama I get a flood of memories.”
