La Cala Resort reinforces its leadership with the ‘Andalucía Costa del Sol Match Play 9 of the European Challenge Tour’ La Cala Resort has been chosen to host the first edition of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Match Play 9 tournament, an event that aspires to shine with its own light in the European calendar this year, to be held from May 18 to 21. The hotel and leisure complex located in Mijas has become a real protagonist by bringing to Andalusian lands one of the two events that the Challenge Tour will play in Spain.
The Asia course has been the designated course to host from May 18 to 21, a new test, which will place La Cala Resort in the spotlight of golfers from around the world. In fact, this event is considered, along with the Andalucía Valderrama Masters, as one of the great events of 2017. The Challenge Tour belongs to the PGA European Tour and constitutes its main senior competition. Of the three courses that the resort has, Asia is the most demanding and respected by professionals. Not in vain, its four holes -par five- require a special skill from the players.
156 players will compete, including members of the European Challenge Tour, the Royal Andalusian Federation and the Royal Spanish Golf Federation. The main attraction of this edition lies in the chosen format that seeks, above all, an agile and intense tournament. For this, 36 holes will be played ‘stroke play’ (the first two rounds) to be followed by ‘match play’ matches over 9 holes for the top 32 finishers. In addition to the cash prizes (worth 200,000 euros), the best classified players will accumulate points and merits for the ‘Road to Oman’, the icing on the cake of the Challenge Tour.
La Cala Resort closed last season with almost 90,000 golfers, a record number. This growth was not only quantitative but also qualitative. So much so that the specialized portal Leading Courses has considered the golf resort as the sixth best in Spain and has placed it among the 60 most valued in the world. The opinions gathered from thousands of international golfers gave it an average score of 8.4 points out of ten.
There will be two types of registrations. The players with ‘Challenge’ category will do it through the Challenge Tour office, while the rest of the participants must write to Pablo Bernárdez through the e-mail pablo.bernardez@rfegolf.es. The tournament has been organized by JGolf 18.0 and promoted by the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Sport of the Andalusian Government, Turismo Costa del Sol, the Association of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol, the City of Mijas, the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, the Consejo Superior de Deportes, and companies such as Kyocera, Titleist and Solan de Cabras, Reale.
