Luis Montojo Fernández from Madrid has finished leader of the International Championship of Spain under-18 held at Lauro Golf. The Malaga course has hosted a championship in which the ninety players have shown a very high level. The tournament, held from the seventh to the tenth of September, has brought together some of the best amateur players from all over Europe, as it was scoring for the R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Luis Montojo Fernandez has managed to proclaim himself winner of the International Championship of Spain under 18 in Lauro Golf after a week where his game has bordered on excellence. He finished the first day sharing the co-lead with a score of two under par and from there he began his fight for the victory. The second and third rounds placed him in an ideal situation, leader with eight under par as a total score. On the last day, the golfer from Madrid managed to maintain, and even extend, the one-stroke lead with which he started the final day and won with a total of seven under par, four more than his closest pursuers.
In second position finished the Austrian Claus Jaeger with a total score of three under par. The central-European golfer started the tournament with a very discreet first day, 77 strokes that distanced him seven strokes away from the lead. However, Claus Jaeger’s golf improved notably in the second and third rounds, four under par and five under par respectively, to earn the merit of starting the last round in the star game. On the final day he shot a 73 to finish with a total of three under par, four behind the tournament champion.
The podium is completed by another Spanish player, Alejandro Aguilera from Madrid with a total of three under par. The golfer of the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid started with a good first round of 70 strokes that placed him as co-leader. The second round also kept him under par with a score of 71, which placed him with a total of three under par after two rounds played. However, a bad third round, 76 strokes, left the young golfer from Madrid far from the lead. However, Alejandro Aguilera did not give up and signed the best card of the last day, four under par, to reach the podium with a total of three under par.
The ninety participants in the championship were able to play three consecutive rounds of golf in which the top fifty players, plus ties, who would advance to the final round were decided. The qualifiers for the final round were those golfers who had a maximum of twelve over par on the course at the end of the third day. A cut result that gives a sample of the good level presented by the total of players who have disputed this International Championship of Spain U-18.
Also, it is worth mentioning the good game presented by the men at the top of the ranking, but who could not reach the podium. Up to six participants have managed to go under par in the total of the tournament. Three more players have joined the leading trident mentioned above as the lucky ones who have managed to win the Malaga course. These are the cases of the Spaniard David Puig, the Slovakian Tadeas Tetak and the Austrian Regner Niklas, all with a total of two under par.
The success in the celebration of this International Championship of Spain U-18 is another example of the firm commitment of Lauro Golf to support the young promises of this sport, both nationally and in Europe. A good example of this is the celebration that took place in its facilities of a test of the Junior Circuit of Finland 2017, the Championship of Spain Interclubs Children 2016 or the Championships of Andalusia Children, Alevín and Benjamín 2016. Continuing in this line, Lauro Golf will host the International Championship of Andalusia Interclubs Children and Cadet during the 16th and 17th of September.
