Marina Golf Mojacar: everything under the sun

One of the characteristics that best define Almeria is the sun. This province records an average of 3,100 hours of sunshine per year. Its extraordinary climate makes hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over Europe feel attracted by the good weather and the wide range of leisure activities offered by this land.

Tourism in Almeria dates back to the visits of the Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans and Carthaginians, but those who stayed the longest were the Arabs, who left a deep mark on cities and towns.

There are many tourist attractions in the province, such as its endless beaches and the marinas that line its coasts, attracting an important nautical tourism.

Another great attraction of Almeria are its natural parks. The Cabo de Gata-Níjar, with volcanic formations, beaches and charming villages, with a landscape full of contrasts. Also noteworthy is the famous Tabernas desert, dry and rugged, which has served as a backdrop for films about the old American West.

With such a mild climate, golf has a perfect habitat here all year round. In the Levante Almeria, north of Cabo de Gata, is where most of the courses are located. Among them and in a privileged situation, next to a beach of crystalline waters, is Marina Golf Mojácar, in the coastal strip of the municipality from which it takes its name.

Its director, Eduardo Tapia, explains what this course designed by Ramón Espinosa is like: “The 18 holes are divided into two distinct halves, with 9 holes close to the sea and the other 9 on the mountain side. Therefore, we could say that they are two completely different courses. The holes closer to the sea are easier to play, while the other 9 are more complicated, more technical, with narrower fairways”.

Marina Golf Mojácar’s signature hole is the 4th, a par 5 of 475 meters, with a tee shot with a drop of around 80 meters. “You hit the driver,” says Tapia, “so the tee shot is quite impressive. In the area, and even in the whole of Spain, there are no courses with so much slope to hit with the driver”.

Apart from the 18-hole course, the complex has a 4-hole pitch and putt course “perfect both for the training of regular players and for the learning of those who are new to golf,” says the director of Marina Golf Mojacar. To this end, the club has a golf academy run by the professional Martín de Archivio, “who is encouraging this sport among children, stimulating them through fun games, because in the end they will be the players of the future”.

Another of Marina Golf Mojacar’s outstanding facilities is the pro-shop. The pro-shop has recently been completely renovated by the Holiday Golf design team and offers a wide variety of clothing and other items for the golfer.

This summer Marina Golf Mojacar has new decoration in the entrance parterres to the club. The decoration has been made with maroon gravels in the background and figures with white gravel.

In addition, plant species adapted to the desert climate have been planted to save water, such as cactus, succulents, banana trees, palm hearts, coconut trees and ribbons, all of them in the white area, while in the maroon area there are agapanthus, pomegranate trees, citrus trees, feather trees and cypresses.

But, although many would like to, life is not only golf, and the complementary tourist offer in the area is very wide. “Apart from playing golf, we are fortunate to have Mojácar, a typical Andalusian village of white houses and narrow streets full of charming little shops and typical taverns where you can have spectacular tapas, and then we have the famous Garrucha shrimp, which gastronomically is one of the best shrimp in Spain. They are fished from a port that is one kilometer from this golf course and can be tasted shortly after the boat has returned from fishing”.
