The Englishman Mark Gibson has been proclaimed absolute champion of the European Challenge for Wheelchair Golfers, held at the Terramar Golf Club, in Sitges (Barcelona), showing an overwhelming superiority and achieving the double by winning in both categories, Scratch and Handicap.
The British player has been the best of the test to deliver partials of 12 – 18 adding 30 points in the total, with six ahead of French Jean Marie Requeut, second place Scratch with 24. Irish Tony Brouder and Dutch Monique Kalkman have tied for third place with 19, and the fifth place has been for the only Spanish representative, Sebas Lorente, the promoter of the tournament that has finished with 17 points.
Gibson also topped the handicap category with a cumulative 65 points (30-35), two points ahead of Tony Brouder and Monique Kalkman, tied for second with 63. Sebas Lorente was fourth with 56 points.
Sebas Lorente: “The evaluation of the tournament by all the participants is spectacular, they have given us 11 out of 10; they leave Sitges delighted and confident that we can organize it again next year. The opportunity we have had to compete only wheelchair players has been a step forward in this modality of adapted golf.
“The Terramar course has excited them. Yesterday it was prepared a bit long and today it was more accessible, although with the demanding flags on both laps. The wind blew a bit but we had a nice and very sunny day. As for my performance, the truth is that today I played terribly, although the result has been a little made up.
“I will need a lot of time to thank all those who have given us their collaboration and support, starting with the partners and staff of Terramar who have given their all, and continuing with all the companies and institutions that have been involved in this initiative. To all of them, thank you very much”.
