McIlroy could return to world number one five years later

It will not be easy this week with the rivals he is facing, but Rory McIlroy could become world number one again five years after occupying the pinnacle of world golf. To unseat Brook Koepka, the Northern Irishman only needs to win the Farmers Insurance Open, a PGA Tour tournament that starts tomorrow at Torrey Pines.

The famous club in San Diego, California, will host the best of the international scene, and also with numerous attractions, including the pairing during the first two days of Tiger Woods and Jon Rahm, who joins the rising star and surprising for his extraordinary performance Collin Morikaya, 22-year-old American and former world number one amateur who debuted on the PGA Tour as a professional last year and is already in the world Top 100.

All the spotlights are going to be on that stellar match, also taking into account that Tiger is the player with the most victories at Torrey Pines, no less than seven at the Farmers Insurance Open and one at the US Open. Not to mention that Rahm got his first PGA Tour win on that same stage, in 2017.

This will be the third time they share a round in a tournament, having previously done so at last year’s Masters, when the Californian scored his fifteenth major, and at the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris, where the Barrika native took the decisive match point for Europe’s victory.
