McIlroy rewards his caddie with a million dollars

Rory McIlroy can be accused of many faults, but not that of being a penny pincher. If not tell that to his caddie, JP Fitzgerald, who has received in his checking account an income of one million dollars transferred by his boss: “A tsunami just hit my bank account, so thank you very much,” wrote the caddie to McIlroy on the eve of the HSBC Champions, as revealed by the Northern Irish player himself.

The bonus collected by Fitzgerald represents ten percent of the ten and a half million dollars that Rory took with him when he won the Tour Championship and the FedExCup. For the latter, the player receives nine million in cash, in addition to another million that he will receive when the time comes for his retirement. McIlroy also pocketed $1.53 million for winning the Tour Championship, the tournament that won him the FedExCup, and he did not hesitate when it came time to reward his caddie, with whom he has a long-standing professional relationship.

Tour caddies typically receive a fixed amount per week plus a percentage of their boss’s winnings, usually 10 percent in the event of a victory.Tour caddies typically receive a stipend for the week and then a percentage of the winnings of up to 10 percent for a victory. McIlroy said he paid his caddie 10 percent of the $9 million he took home that day from his FedEx Cup bonus, and 10 percent of Tour Championship winnings.

“I think he was very happy,” said a smiling McIlroy referring to the moment his caddie received the million-dollar sum into his account.McIlroy has no qualms about sharing the wealth he hoards at tournaments. “He deserved it,” he said. “He contributes a lot to what I do. He was with me when I was 210th in world ranking and when I was No. 1.”
