Never seen before: three Spaniards win in unison on the PGA Tour, European Tour and Ladies European Tour. The feat was accomplished by Jon Rham in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Jorge Campillo in the Hassan II Trophy of Morocco and Nuria Iturrios in the Lalla Meryem Classic.
Rham won the PGA Tour pairs tournament in tandem with American Ryan Palmer. In second place was the duo formed by Sergio García and Tommy Fleetwood, three strokes behind the winners.
Campillo has been rewarded for his sensational golfing evolution with his first victory on the European Tour. It has been in Morocco, in the classic Trophee Hassan II, where the Extremaduran has completed a glorious day for Spanish golf that began with the victory of Nuria Iturrios in the same course, Royal Golf Dar Es Salam, in Rabat.
Campillo pinch ball Sunday from second place, one stroke behind the then leader, South African Erik van Rooyen. The picture darkened considerably with two consecutive bogeys (holes 2 and 3), but the Spaniard did not fall apart. Far from it.
He grew with birdies (8 and 11) to face the final stretch in the lead. His new successes on 16 and 17 ended up certifying his victory, the one he had fought so hard for. Erik van Rooyen did not quite get the hang of the round, and finished two strokes behind the Spaniard and equal with the American Julian Suri.
In the last two months the Cáceres native had accumulated two second places, Oman and Qatar, and a third, India. And to those good results had to be added a dozen Top 20 in 2018. Seen like that, it was clear that Campillo’s victory was to fall.
As for Iturrios, the Pro Spain Team player has achieved in the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco her second victory in the Ladies European Tour. She has done it with great brilliance and authority and, curiously, in the same course where she won for the first time, Royal Golf Dar Es Salam, in Rabat.
The Spaniard has finished the tournament with -13, rounds of 68, 71, 70 and 70 impacts, and a lead of seven over the Swedish Caroline Hedwall and Lina Boqvist, the latter her partner in the co-lead at the beginning of the day. In this fourth and final round, which already looked like a head-to-head between the two, Nuria Iturrios has used her solidity -three birdies without fail- and the nerves of her rival (77).
It is a coincidence that Iturrios, who had just won the Santander Tour Golf event in Lauro, had already made his debut in this same tournament, but in 2016. On that occasion he won with a fantastic 65 on the last day.
