On Monday, April 18, a meeting of captains and representatives of different teams that will participate in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will take place at La Reserva de Sotogrande. Manuel Piñero, who will act as host, and taking advantage of the celebration of the Spanish Open at the Real Club Valderrama, La Reserva joins in this way to a historic event, the return of golf to the Games, one hundred and twelve years after its last inclusion in the Olympic program.
With just a few months to go before the deadline for player qualification on July 11, the captains have already begun to prepare for the Olympic Games and this meeting will serve to share experiences in preparation for Rio 2016.
The captains will offer a press conference at the Club House of La Reserva de Sotogrande at 14.00 hours. Beforehand, they will play the course designed by Cabell Robinson and inaugurated in 2003. Manuel Piñero, captain of the Spanish men’s team, is very excited about the return of golf to the Olympic Games. “It is something historic and Spain has very good players, I am convinced that we can reach very high”, he assures.
Piñero has recently joined La Reserva de Sotogrande to contribute his valuable experience as a professional, one of the best in Spanish golf, with the objective of turning this complex into one of the most important resorts in Europe and at the same time into a great family club.
“We start from an excellent base, we have first class facilities and golf course, in a wonderful place with a great climate, and a very experienced team. In addition, we are going to make some investments that will greatly improve the experience of golfers who visit us and those who play regularly, such as enlarging the driving range, creating a short game area and making small modifications to the course to make it more accessible to a greater number of players, as it is now very demanding,” he explains.
Piñero is very committed to this project and is excited to bring together in its facilities a good representation of the teams that will compete for Olympic medals next summer.
The CEO of Sotogrande S.A., Marc Topiol, assures that “we share Mr. Piñero’s enthusiasm for the return of golf to the Olympic Games. It is an honor to host the captains at La Reserva, of which Manuel is part; that is why we wanted to support him as Spanish captain and host, to carry out a meeting with the European Olympic captains”.
