PGA Catalunya, Spain’s official candidate for the 2022 Ryder Cup

The Stadium Course, voted Best Golf Course in Spain at the World Golf Awards, is the chosen venue for an official bid supported by the Spanish and Catalan governments and the main institutions involved. Spain is one of the six candidate countries to host the 2022 Ryder Cup, one of the biggest global sporting events. In 2014, The Ryder Cup was televised in more than 180 territories, reaching a global audience of more than 544 million households.

Denis O’Brien, owner of PGA Catalunya Resort, commented: “From its inception, the Stadium Course was designed and built with the intention of hosting the Ryder Cup. Hosting the 2022 edition would be the culmination of that vision. We have worked very hard and made significant investments in recent years to make PGA Catalunya Resort unique. We have plans to further develop the courses and the exclusive designer property offering, leading the way internationally for a new generation of golf resorts. This bid has our full commitment.”

PGA Catalunya Resort, which is part of the select group of European Tour Destinations, was elected European Golf Resort of the Year 2015 by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO). Last May, the resort hosted the 2014 Open de España, won by Miguel Ángel Jiménez, and has hosted the final stage of the European Tour qualifying school for the past seven editions.

Spain’s bid for the 2022 Ryder Cup, led by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, has the support of the main Spanish and Catalan institutions, including the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD), the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Diputació de Barcelona, Diputació de Girona, the Ajuntament de Barcelona, the Ajuntament de Girona and the Federació Catalana de Golf.

With the joint support of these institutions, PGA Catalunya Resort has been chosen for its: – Proximity to the cities of Barcelona and Girona, two international airports and high-speed train connectivity. – Availability of accommodation and tourist services of first international level in both neighboring cities and in the tourist areas of the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees. – Experience of the territory in hosting global sporting events such as the European Tour golf, the Summer Olympic Games, the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Moto GP, the Swimming World Championships (FINA) or the Basketball World Championships (FIBA). – First class international golf offer, including more than 40 golf courses in the Costa Brava and all Catalonia.
