RCG Guadalmina, confirmed as the venue for the Andalucía Costa del Sol Women’s Spanish Open 2020

The Real Club de Golf Guadalmina, located in the Malaga town of San Pedro de Alcántara, will once again host the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España Femenino with the memory still vivid of the spectacular victory of Azahara Muñoz (first by a Spaniard in the national open) in the 2017 edition held at its facilities. On this occasion, this competition to be held between 26 and 29 November will serve as a magnificent finale to the Race to Costa del Sol, the order of merit of the Ladies European Tour, and will feature a spectacular prize purse of 600,000 €.

The Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España Femenino, which has the main sponsorship of the Consejería de Turismo, Regeneración, Justicia y Administración Local de la Junta de Andalucía, Turismo y Planificación Costa del Sol and Acosol – Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental, comes to a club that has recently turned 60 years old and that, once again, dresses up to host the tournament. The Real Club de Golf Guadalmina is a magnificent example of the quality offered by the courses of Andalusia and the Costa del Sol, one of the most important destinations in Europe, and becomes the stage where the Race to Costa del Sol (Race to Costa del Sol), the Ladies European Tour ranking that has adopted this new and attractive name, will close.

“We have very fresh in our memory the 2017 edition of the Open de España that was played in Guadalmina. It was the perfect Open in terms of the course, weather, result… Having Azahara Muñoz and Carlota Ciganda fighting for the title, which Azahara finally took in front of her own, was incredible. In fact, it was one of the reasons that led us to think about organizing a new Spanish Open,” explains Ignacio del Cuvillo, director of the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina. “The Women’s Spanish Open at Guadalmina is a wonderful challenge and the club has thrown itself into this initiative. In addition, we must thank all our members, both nationals and foreigners (of 17 different nationalities) for their support and generosity, as they gladly cede the course after enjoying a wonderful experience at the 2017 Women’s Spanish Open.”

The marked character of the southern course, a design by the renowned Javier Arana remodeled by Stirling & Martin that combines beauty and difficulty, returns to test the Ladies European Tour golfers who would do well not to trust the favorable statistics of 2017. If that year the Open de España became a prolific tournament in good results (and its participants broke records by adding a total of 1271 birdies and 35 eagles throughout the four days of competition, maximums in both statistics in an edition of the Open de España), the preparation of the course and its location in the calendar will make the players meet an even more demanding opponent.

Although its fairways are deceptively wide and there are hardly any water hazards, the trees become decisive elements from the tee and add to the difficulty offered by the par 3’s of the course, especially if the wind is blowing.

“The facilities of the south course are ideal for the women’s game and this was recognized by the participants of the 2017 Open. The course gives a lot of game, it is spectacular and, at the same time, comfortable to walk. It can offer two sides: the more complicated and the more entertaining,” notes Del Cuvillo. “We have made major improvements over the last two years, especially in terms of beautification and aesthetics by widening the tee platforms, and by November the course will be in perfect condition. If we have one of those wonderful weeks typical of this area in terms of weather, it will be a magnificent showcase for the Costa del Sol and Andalusia”.

Thanks to its situation as the last event of the Ladies European Tour calendar and its reinforced prize purse, the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España Femenino has all the incentives to bring together the best players on the circuit and become a must for golf fans. The great role of the Spanish professionals in the international arena and the recent memory of their successes will undoubtedly be a magnificent magnet for all those who plan to visit the area at the end of November. It will be the seventh time in the history of this tournament that the Costa del Sol hosts a Women’s Spanish Open after those played at Flamingos in 2010, La Quinta in 2011 and 2018, Aloha Golf in 2016 and 2019, and Guadalmina in 2017.

The president of Turismo Costa del Sol, Francisco Salado, has highlighted the importance for the Costa del Sol the celebration of this event of such relevance in the world of golf, “an event that again highlights the commitment of the destination for women’s golf, while showing that the Costa del Sol is a safe destination that is ready to welcome all golfers both national and international, with golf courses that have been adapted and with professionals who continue to work for the Costa del Sol remains a leading destination for this segment”.

For its celebration has been essential the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Regeneration, Justice and Local Administration of the Junta de Andalucía, Tourism and Planning Costa del Sol and Acosol – Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, all of them aware of the importance of golf for domestic and foreign tourists who choose the Costa del Sol and aware of their invaluable work in promoting sports and tourism.
