Sergio Jiménez and Rocío Tejedo, champions of Spain U16

Sergio Jiménez from Madrid and Rocío Tejedo from Castellón are the new champions of Spain Under 16. Their great performance in Alenda Golf and Alicante Golf have earned them these titles which, in the case of the Madrid golfer, has brought a plus in the form of success with historical dyes.

Sergio Jiménez (-2), the genius who emerged from Pitch & Putt, has obtained a double for the history of Spanish men’s golf: he has won in the same course the Spanish Championship Under 18 and, now, the Under 16. In both events he put into practice the knowledge acquired in his successful career in par 3.

The golfer trained in the factory of the Centro de Tecnificación de la Federación de Golf de Madrid has closed this victorious circle winning at Alenda Golf with the only card accumulated under par, -2. His rounds of 70, 70 and 74 strokes have sealed a deserved triumph; he has beaten by two impacts the also from Madrid Álvaro Pastor (par), signatory of the best round of the day, 70 strokes.

Serious and sober throughout the week, Sergio Jiménez found the only moment of uncertainty on the 6th hole, which closed with an uncomfortable -3 on the day, but he was able to contain the bleeding and straighten out the round with a couple of birdies for the last nine holes. The third place was shared by Curro Martínez from Castilla-La Mancha and the Catalan Mikhail Efremov -two of the freshest revelations of the tournament-, both with +3 to the total.

Sergio Jiménez, with a round identical to that of the first day (70 strokes), took over the lead on the second day from Kostka Horno (76), who played a tremendously irregular round in which he had practically all the results, from birdies and bogeys to an eagle and a double bogey.

One and the other circumstance led Jiménez to collect a juicy five-stroke lead at the end of those 36 holes, which also served to check the good hands of the aforementioned Curro Martínez. Catalan Jorge Berea was another of the names of the day on Saturday, as his was the best card ever seen in Alenda, a magnificent 68.

Rocío Tejedo uncovers the jar of essences in Alicante Golf

Everything pointed to a really close last day at Alicante Golf, at the end of photo finish. But it was not so, as Rocio Tejedo (+1) put ground in the classification halfway through her round in a day that was born with a triple tie in the lead.

The player from Castellón took advantage of the fact that her teammates in the lead, Keira González from the Canary Islands and Paula Martín from Madrid, were unable to make birdies, to open the gap with four birdies in the first eleven holes, which put her on track for what is her most important victory to date.

Sister of Carla, a golfer with a consistent career in Spanish women’s golf, from whom she has inherited many golfing virtues, Rocío Tejedo lost the opportunity to finish under par with two bogeys on the last two holes, which, however, did not detract one iota from her brilliant triumph.

The Levantine is five strokes ahead of Andalusia’s Julia Sanchez (+6), owner of the best round of the competition, who was able to recover from an unlucky middle day (80) to share the lead with Paula Martin, winner of the Women’s National Scorecard a few weeks ago, and the Basque Martina Lopez-Lanchares.

Going back to the beginning of the week, the first leader of the competition was Julia Sanchez, who broke away on Friday with a great card of 69 strokes. However, in the second day that success vanished, giving way to the shared leadership of Keira Gonzalez, Rocio Tejedo and Paula Martin.

The Valencian repeated the card of the first day (73 strokes), with four bogeys and three birdies, while the Madrilenian and the Canarian signed a card with one more stroke, 74, which led them to lower the shutter of the day at Alicante Golf as co-leaders.
