Sergio has done it again and has won his third crown as champion of the Andalucía Valderrama Masters. The Spaniard from Castellón successfully defended the title by four strokes ahead of Ireland’s Shane Lowrie, who shot a final round of 66. Garcia was three strokes clear at the start of today’s round after heavy rains yesterday at Valderrama forced the tournament to be postponed.
The 2017 Masters champion, completed the round that was cut short yesterday with three birdies and a bogey in his final 11 holes to finish the week at 12 under par over the 54 holes that ultimately made up the tournament.
Garcia’s impressive third victory in this competition, following his successes in 2011 and 2017, has confirmed his love affair with a course he has called one of his favorites in the world.
Lowrie has even put Garcia in trouble when he reduced the lead to one stroke thanks to three birdies in a row at the start of the back nine, but a double bogey on the short 15th put paid to his aspirations of matching the Spaniard.
Finland’s Mikko Korhonen finished third, two strokes behind Lowrie, England’s Ashley Chesters was fourth, and Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño finished fifth and thus achieved his goal of keeping his card for next season by finishing in the top 116 of the Race to Dubai.
Sergio’s victory, who had his brother as caddie for the first time, was attended by his wife and daughter.
