Sotogrande

The Costa del Sol includes at its western end the Cadiz municipality of San Roque, with its macro-urbanization Sotogrande, where the world famous Real Club Valderrama is located, venue of the historic 1997 Ryder Cup, the first European Ryder Cup played outside the British Isles, on continental soil. This course, repeatedly chosen by the specialized press as the best course in continental Europe, has an unparalleled curriculum in Spain in terms of hosting international tournaments of great importance, from the Volvo Masters to the American Express World Championships through the Ryder Cup.

In the aforementioned macro-urbanization there are other golf courses of great renown such as the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, of enormous international prestige and like Valderrama designed by Robert Trent Jones; The San Roque Club, with its two fantastic courses, the Old Course, designed by Dave Thomas, and the New, designed by Perry Dye; Almenara and La Reserva de Sotogrande. In San Roque, in the district of Guadiaro, is also located the first municipal golf course of the Costa del Sol: La Cañada, whose first nine holes were designed by Robert Trent Jones and the second, by Dave Thomas, former Ryder Cup player and designer of The Belfry along with Peter Alliss.

Straddling the municipalities of San Roque and La Línea de la Concepción, the two 18-hole courses of the Alcaidesa club, which enjoy spectacular views of the sea, Gibraltar and the African coast, are located. Alcaidesa Links, designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark, is the only links-type course in southern Europe, while the layout of Alcaidesa Heathland is the work of Dave Thomas.
