The Costa del Sol, in the world media spotlight: LIV Golf, Solheim Cup and Women’s Open de España

With the Real Club Valderrama warming up for the LIV Golf Grand Prix (June 30-July 2), Finca Cortesín in perfect condition for the Solheim Cup (September 22-24) and the Real Club Las Brisas finalizing details for the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España Femenino (November 23-26), the Costa del Sol is going to attract media attention from all over the world during these months.

The first event, on the extraordinary course that has hosted the Ryder Cup, the Volvo Masters, the Am-Ex World Championships, the Open de España and the Andalucía Masters, will be an exceptional opportunity to see live many of the best players in the world who, thanks to LIV Golf, will play a tournament in Spain for the first time.

It will be a delight to see top players like Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau or Brooks Koepka in action, to name just a few. And the same will happen when remembering the presence in Valderrama, almost 26 years later, of a legend like Phil Mickelson in that historic Ryder Cup that was played for the first time on European continental soil, outside the British Isles. It will also be a pleasure to see Sergio García, winner of three Andalucía Masters here, in action again, and we will also have the opportunity to observe Eugenio López-Chacarra for the first time as a professional.

And after the great golf feast, which will be accompanied by other recreational activities that accompany the LIV Golf tournaments and that will undoubtedly surprise the public that will presumably flock to Valderrama, will come the big event of the year of international women’s golf, the Solheim Cup. Another of the most prestigious international courses in Costa del Sol and also with an enviable curriculum as a venue for major tournaments (three editions of the World Match Play Championship), Finca Cortesin, will be filled with fans from around the world to see the duel between the best players in Europe and the United States.

With months to go, more than 45,000 tickets have been sold, which seems to presage that this Finca Cortesin could become the first Solheim Cup to be sold out.

A couple of months later, it will be the turn of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España Femenino at another of the great courses of the Costa del Sol, the RCG Las Brisas, designed -like Valderrama- by the legendary and brilliant designer Robert Trent Jones Senior, with whom the other great architect who designed Finca Cortesín, Cabell B. Robinson, worked.

And this Marbella course also boasts an enviable track record as a venue for major tournaments. It has hosted two editions of the World Cup and another two of the Spanish Open. The first World Cup in 1973 brought together the most outstanding stars of the time, such as Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Johnny Miller.

The Costa del Sol, in short, is in luck and the local, provincial and regional authorities, together with the private initiative, must make every effort to make the most of this fantastic opportunity to demonstrate, once again, why this well named Costa del Golf is one of the tourist destinations that attract more golfers worldwide.
