
In an event with international tour operators, which was attended by the president of the Provincial Council and Costa del Sol Tourism, Francisco Salado; the vice president of the Provincial Council of Malaga, Margarita del Cid; the mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz; the mayor of Benahavís and president of the Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, José Antonio Mena; Manuel Cardeña, councilor of Acosol and deputy mayor delegate of Sports of the City Council of Marbella; and the mayor of Mijas, Josele González, as well as the president of the RFEG, Gonzaga Escauriaza; and the president and manager of the RFGA, Pablo Mansilla and Miguel Navarro respectively, the authorities present showed their willingness “now more than ever to join efforts to make the Solheim on the Costa del Sol a reality in 2023”.
The president of the Ladies European Tour, Marta Figueras-Dotti, said that the Costa del Sol has the best conditions to host the solheima in 2023 and stressed that it would be the best in history.
The Costa del Golf continues to position itself as indispensable for national and international women’s golf. In recent years the Costa del Sol has become the reference destination for major golf tournaments of national and international scope, in which women have played a leading role, such as the Women’s Golf Open.
In Spain there are more than 80,000 women’s licenses, of which 12,151 are Andalusian, which means that 29.5% and 27.7% of the national and regional total, respectively, are women’s licenses, while Malaga has 5,000 Malaga licenses according to data from the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation, which represents 58% of the total number of women’s licenses in Andalusia.
The Solheim Cup is a biennial golf tournament contested by teams of 12 players representing Europe and the United States and is one of the world’s major sporting events. The inaugural Solheim Cup was held in 1990 and golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim (PING) was instrumental in its introduction. The tournament format is played over three days, like the Ryder Cup, and there are numerous activities beforehand.
The last edition of the Solheim Cup was played in 2017 at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club in Iowa, where the United States conquered the fifteenth edition of the Solheim Cup (16.5 – 11.5).
Costa del Sol Tourism has organized for tomorrow the Costa del Sol Ambassador Cuo, a golf tournament between international tour operators and businessmen of the destination, with the aim of strengthening the relationship between the two. After the tournament will be held a lunch and awards ceremony.
