Spaniard Sergio Garcia, with a total of 270 strokes (-18), after a final card with 69 (-3), has won the KLM Open, which is his sixteenth title on the European Tour, and the first so far in 2019.
Sergio Garcia, one of the stars who have already confirmed their presence at the Spanish Open, which will be played in early October at the Club de Campo in Madrid, at 39 years of age, won the tournament in Amsterdam with a one-stroke lead over Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard, who finished in second place.
The born in Borriol (Castellón), who throughout his career has reached the second position in the world ranking, broke in Dutch lands his 2019 drought, and he did it with his usual mastery. He took the lead at the end of Saturday, shared with Englishman Callum Shinkwin, and was able to maintain it alone until the end despite the push of Hojgaard, who delivered a final card with 68 strokes.
And, with seven birdies (the first on the opening hole) and fourbogeys, not only did he soon take the lead alone, but he was three strokes ahead of Hojgaard, the only one who kept pace with him. The bogey on the 17th, which together with the Dane’s birdie on the 18th reduced his lead to just one stroke, mattered little, as he was able to maintain his composure on the last hole, a par five of 482 meters with a lake near the green.
He also won the title in Amsterdam, in what was his first appearance in the tournament and in the Centenary edition, and enters the Race to Dubai. He already has 16 titles on the European Tour, adding to an impressive record with 19 wins on the PGA Tour, six on the Asian Tour, six Ryder Cups with Team Europe and, above all, the Augusta Masters in 2017.
The Englishman Shinkwin ‘punctured’ in the last round, with a card with 74 strokes (+2), and went to fifth place. And a good performance by the Chilean Hugo León, who finished seventh, with 70 strokes (-2) on the last day, seven strokes behind García. The Argentine Andres Romero finished twenty-first, with 280 (-8); while the Spaniard Eduardo De la Riva finished fortieth, with 283 (-5).
