José Antonio Mena, mayor of the municipality of Benahavís, received from the hands of the President of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation, Ángel de la Riva, the Plaque of Merit in Golf, a recognition with which the federation wanted to thank the municipality for the great support it has always given to the sport of golf.
Located in the mountains and in a natural environment of special beauty, Benahavís has eight golf courses – 11 percent of the total number of courses on the Costa del Sol – and a total of 135 holes.
Today, it is the fourth municipality in number of courses in the province of Malaga, only surpassed by Marbella, Mijas and Estepona. This and, above all, the great quality of its layouts – highlighting the designs of Manuel Piñero and Severiano Ballesteros in La Quinta and Los Arqueros -, the fame of the Villa Padierna brand, or the prestige of the Atalaya courses, make Benahavís a perfect tourist destination for golf lovers.
In his words, the president of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation thanked the City Council of Benahavís as representative of the municipality for the good disposition and support that the federation has always received from the consistory, and declared that it was normal to pay him this tribute and grant him the highest distinction that the organization delivers.
Upon receiving it, José Mena wanted to extend this award to all the farms in the area, their directors and the professionals who work in them.
The event was also attended by Manolo Piñero, who has just been appointed captain of the men’s team that will represent Spain at the next Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016, and who was part of the presidential table.
Also present at the event were representatives of local farms, including Andrés Sánchez (director of Atalaya); Ulf Svendsen and Agustín Agüera (Los Arqueros); and the Count of Perlac and Antonio Lantero (Villa Padierna).
