Golf Río Real, one of the best courses in Spain, designed by Javier Arana, will host next Saturday, the 23rd, one of the events of the Seve Ballesteros-Mercedes Benz Foundation Challenge. The Challenge, which this year celebrates its fourth edition, is a series of charity tournaments whose proceeds are used to finance clinical research on brain tumors and support young golf players, purposes for which Seve set up his Foundation. The first edition took place on April 9, 2011 at 140 golf courses throughout Spain, where 12,000 participants paid tribute to Seve on his birthday. Thanks to the funds raised, in November 2011 the FSB signed an agreement with the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) for the creation of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation-CNIO Laboratory.
The 2015 Challenge consists of 37 tournaments to be played from April to September under the Greensome modality, and a final at Real Golf de Pedreña to which the winning pairs of the previous phase of clubs will be invited, whose prize will be a trip to Malaysia to participate in the Pro-Am of the EurAsia Cup 2016, a competition that pits the best European players against Asian players.
According to external assessment, the work carried out by the Seve Ballesteros Foundation-CNIO laboratory, led by the researcher Massimo Squatrito, is of high scientific quality and will undoubtedly contribute to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms that regulate tumor formation in the Central Nervous System, as well as to improve its response to certain therapeutic approaches. The results obtained so far are not likely to modify the current clinical approach to the disease in the short term; however, they may contribute to lay the groundwork for identifying new therapeutic targets and mechanisms of action, which will allow the development of new therapeutic strategies to improve the treatment and prognosis of patients with glioma and medulloblastoma.
