On November 23rd, one day after Thanksgiving, the Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas will host the awaited head-to-head match between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson with a special prize of nine million dollars for the winner. The event, called The Match, has already been scheduled and priced.
It will kick off at 3 p.m. (local time) with a recommended pay-per-view price of $19.99. This event, conceived as a television show and hosted at MGM Resorts International’s exclusive arena, is not expected to be open to the public, so it could only be followed on TV and possibly on-line.
The duel is being billed as a “winner-take-all showdown”. Although the two players will undertake other challenges on a selective basis that will allow them to increase the available pot, with long shots or challenges to leave the ball closer to the hole, which will be donated to the charity of the eventual winner’s choice.
Woods and Mickelson are two of the most successful golfers in the world. Between them they have 19 majors and this year they managed to put an end to a five-year drought without victories on the PGA Tour. Both suffered the bitter defeat of the U.S. Ryder Cup team in Paris. Tiger has not played since, and Phil opened the new season with a tied 17th at the Safeway Open.
