Weekend plans in Marrakech

Morocco is a good destination if you want to make a short trip for many reasons, but one of them is, logically, its proximity.

Even so, the country has much more to offer and we want to leave you a list of good plans to make a weekend in Marrakech and come back feeling that you have made a spectacular trip, if by any chance you go more days and need plans for a week in Marrakech here you go.

.

Must-see buildings and structures

Although it is a big city, time is short and you have to decide what to visit. Being very difficult to choose, we can say that in Marrakech there are four must-see places, which will occupy your time.

You have two palaces, the El Badi Palace and the Bahia Palace. You will probably only have time to see one of them.

The first is in ruins but has a spectacularity difficult to find even in the most pampered buildings. It is less expensive and less touristic and as a remarkable element it has an original Cordovan pulpit.

The second is Arab-Andalusian style, highly decorated with mosaics, beautiful ceilings and a garden densely populated with flowers, fruit trees and other plants that is very nice to see accompanied by exquisite architecture.

Another place to visit is the Saadi Tombs. They have an ostentatious mausoleum for the dynasty, which lasted a century, between the sixteenth and seventeenth. However, it also exudes mystery, mysticism and, well, what any mortuary architecture.

And focusing on religion, Marrakech is home to the most remarkable ancient medieval Koranic school in the country. And most importantly, one of the few religious sites where non-Muslims can visit.

And is that the mosques, which are so many and so excited us to go see, are only for practitioners of the religion, so you can not enter to see them, although we advise, of course, that you make a tour to see several from the outside.

.

The life of the Jemaa el Fna

Jemaa el Fna is a huge pedestrian area considered the heart of Marrakech, a very important place that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Early in the morning, when you go out to the market (for juice and vegetables), you find the typical scene of Aladdin, snake charmers, acrobats, sword swallowers and other artists.

After the snack (Spanish) the place is transformed, appearing food stalls with typical dishes, you can enjoy in panoramic terraces and watch some stalls while the sunset takes place.

.

Relax in the hamman

Although some have already been installed in Spain, it is not comparable to relax in a real hammam than to go to the ones we have here (which are not many either).

They are places where you get steam baths, exfoliate and massage but the situation is little or nothing like that of a spa. There are places for all budgets, from super traditional to luxurious and more designed for tourists, which are usually found in the hotels themselves.

.

Visiting the souks

Of course, you have to visit some souks, which are the typical markets of the city and the whole country.

The usual thing is that in these markets the stalls are grouped according to the product they sell, united by craftsmanship so to speak. There are shoes, spices, ceramics, antiques… But if you are only in Marrakech for a weekend you will have to inform yourself and choose well which ones to go to.

.

Stroll through the Majorelle Gardens

Take some time to visit the new area. It’s not the most impressive thing in Marrakech, of course, but there is something worthwhile, the Majorelle Gardens.

It is a very relaxing place full of tropical plant species, walkways, bridges, ponds, squares and paths that create stunning snapshots.

.

Balloon Riding

Although you will probably not have time, in Marrakech you have the opportunity to ride a balloon to fly over the Atlas Mountains and see the city in a different way. In addition, this service is seasoned with some food or camel ride.

Undoubtedly, Marrakech is a really interesting destination both for its beauty and for the cultural shock that we assume so, even if it is a weekend, do not hesitate to drop by the capital.
One of the recommended plans is to visit the desert of Merzouga, which is very close and despite being something on the outskirts of Marrakech of the most demanded activities.
