Her name is Rachel Heck, she’s in high school, she’s 15 years old, she’s one of the best teenage golfers in her country and she will be the youngest player to play in the U.S. Women’s Open that starts tomorrow.
The girl has earned such a coveted place in the roster of players of this major, which is held at Trump National in Bedminister, New Jersey, thanks to her second place in one of the qualifying events for access to the major played last month.
“I’m totally nervous, but even more excited,” said Heck, for whom her participation in this big one “is a dream come true.”
Despite her precociousness, Heck is by far not the youngest to play in the U.S. Women’s Open. The record is held by fellow American Lucy Li, who was 11 when she qualified to play in that major in 2014. At 12 years old, compatriots Lexi Thompson and Morgan Pressel made their Open debuts. Michelle Wie, winner of the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open, made her debut in that tournament in the 2003 edition, when she was only 13 years old.
