Jon Rahm has been suspended by the PGA Tour after the Spanish golfer reached an agreement with LIV Golf, the Saudi circuit with which the Basque player has signed a contract worth more than 500 million euros over four years.
In the statement, the PGA Tour explains that “in accordance with the regulations, Jon Rahm has been notified that he is suspended and is no longer eligible to participate in PGA Tour tournaments following his association with other unauthorized tournaments.”
The signing of Jon Rahm by LIV Golf, the League that was born in 2022 driven from Saudi Arabia and whose visible head is Greg Norman, has caused an earthquake in world golf. The Spaniard joins other national players in this circuit, such as Sergio Garcia, Eugenio Lopez Chacarra and David Puig.
Rahm, 29, will arrive at LIV as the current champion of the Augusta Masters (his second major, after the US Open in 2021) and joins golf stars such as his compatriot Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka or Phil Mickelson.
In June 2023, LIV Golf, PGA Tour and PGA European Tour announced that they had initiated a merger process that is not yet complete.
“I am proud to join LIV Golf and be part of something new that is growing the sport. I have no doubt that this is a great opportunity for me and my family and I am very excited for the future,” Rahm said in statements provided by the Saudi golf league.
Rahm’s contract will be one of the richest in the history of the sport and, although the economic details have not been specified, everything indicates that his income will exceed 500 million euros.
