A bogey on the 15th that made him lose the lead and, above all, a sensational birdie by the American Brian Harmann on the 18th put paid to Jon Rahm’s hopes of winning the Wells Fargo Championship, an American Tour tournament played at the Eagle Point club in Wilmington (North Carolina).
The young Basque, twelfth in the world ranking, finished in fourth place, two strokes behind Harmann, who also left in the lurch the world number one, Dustin Johnson and Pat Perez, both one stroke behind the winner.
Harmann added his second win on the PGA Tour thanks to his superb putt on the last hole and the birdie he also made on the 17th.
The Biscayan from Barrika closed his performance with 71 strokes for a total of 280, achieved his sixth top 10 of the season and is fourth in the FedExCup standings.
His compatriots Rafael Cabrera Bello and Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño made the cut and finished 24th and 42nd respectively.
