A 7-year-old golfer with one arm is up for one of the Laureus World Sports Awards in the “Best Sports Moment” category. American Tommy Morrissey, who has rubbed shoulders with international golfing greats while raising money for charity, is one of the world’s best golfers of his age and has a sensational swing. The boy, who was born with only one of his upper limbs, has met the likes of Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson.
With his parents, Tommy, a native of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, raises money for his UnLIMBited Foundation, which helps other children who were born with limb differences or who have lost limbs. The foundation also encourages other children to do activities they never thought possible.
Tommy, whose first contact with golf was when he was 3 years old, is competing for the Laureus nomination with three other contenders for “Best Sports Moment.” One is Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, who made a statement to support victims of sexual abuse when she returned to competition after two years of retirement.
Another is a cricket commentator who interrupted a match between Great Britain and India to read an email from a fan who was lying next to his dying father.
The third contender for the award is a Dutch soccer club whose players threw stuffed toys from their stadium into the hands of sick children at a children’s hospital whom they invited to watch a game.
Voting for the four contenders is open online until October 31.
