Ana Pelaez from Malaga wins the Women’s Madrid Open

The player from Malaga, Ana Pelaez, has been proclaimed champion of the Women’s Madrid Open, an event valid for the World Ranking, played over 54 holes at the Golf Santander course. The Andalusian, leader from start to finish, has won with three strokes less than the Guipuzcoa Natalia Aseguinolaza and four strokes ahead of the Catalan Paz Marfa. Clara Moyano won the trophy as the best player from Madrid.

The stellar match of this last day was made up of Ana and Natalia together with the Valencian Belén Amorós. Although the winner started as leader with five and six strokes less than her teammates, her four consecutive bogeys from three to six, by two hits and an error of the Guipuzcoan, have put the brakes on what seemed to be a triumphant walk of the Malaga, who, for a moment, has come to fear “the worst”.

Ana Peláez: “This trophy is another step in my career and has helped me to continue gaining experience. I made four bogeys because of anxiety, I wanted to make more birdies on holes I didn’t have to. On the seventh hole I decided I couldn’t go on like that, that I had to be more patient and from then on I played better: all pars until the end, some very good, and others that I think should have become birdies. The putt didn’t work, although I can’t say it failed. The best shot was a bunker shot on the 15th.

“I am very happy to have won in a great course like Golf Santander, where you have to play your best game; here it is not enough to be good at 60-meter shots, no, in this course you have to know how to play your best golf also at 100 and 200 meters. And, above all, you have to know where to attack the greens, which are very bumpy”.

The 17-year-old player from Río Real (Marbella) and member for the second year of the Blume National School team, adds this triumph to her brilliant track record that includes several Spanish Pitch&Putt Championships in different categories, the Spanish Mixed Doubles, gold medal in the European Team Championship U-18 in 2015 and the prestigious Annika Invitational, also in 2015. “All the victories are important but the most special have been the gold in the European, because I contributed to our team winning, and the Annika, because I realized that alone I could also achieve it”, adds the champion of the Madrid Open, who in August will go to the University of South Carolina to study “Business”.
