The Royal Andalusian Golf Federation has, as of January 31, 2023, a total of 50,003 federated licenses, according to the latest count published by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation. Thus, during the last year, the Andalusian federation has added more than 1,100 new fans of the sport, representing a year-on-year increase of 2.3 percent.
This data is especially important if we take into account that the number of federated members had not been above 50,000 since 2012, when the economic crisis caused the Andalusian community to begin a period of decline in licenses, which did not begin its comeback until 2019, a year that, in statistical terms, was considered a turning point. Precisely, the growth from the beginning of 2020 to this beginning of 2023 has been more than 12 percent.
Pablo Mansilla, president of the Royal Andalusian Golf Federation, already anticipated this increase in licenses at the Annual Meeting of Directors of Golf Courses held last Tuesday, January 31, at the federative headquarters. At the meeting, the president of the organization stressed the importance of the promotional work carried out by the different Andalusian golf schools to bring the sport closer to society.
Similarly, he highlighted the important role that the celebration of major golf events in the Andalusian community has for the promotion of the sport among society and for the creation of new fans. In this sense, this year 2023 is a milestone for the celebration, during the month of September, of the Solheim Cup – the highest international competition of women’s golf and one of the most important events in women’s sport worldwide – in the Malaga course of Finca Cortesin.
As for the distribution of licenses by provinces, it should be noted that, of these 50,000 licenses, more than 20,500 are in the province of Malaga, which -followed by Cadiz, with more than 10,300- is the province with the largest number of golf enthusiasts in the Andalusian region and also has the largest concentration of golf courses in Continental Europe.
