Atalaya Old Course, the renovation of a classic course

“A prestigious course in the heart of the Costa del Sol”.

Atalaya Old Course, one of the two 18-hole courses of Atalaya Golf & Country Golf, is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious courses in southern Spain due to its design and location, in the heart of the Costa del Sol, between Marbella and Estepona.

Andrés Sánchez, its director, is convinced that this course is one of the best in the area. “The course,” he says, “was designed in 1968 by the German Bernhard von Limburger on an estate with few slopes and great vegetation, close to the beach, between Estepona and Benahavís”. It was done the way they used to do it before, when land was not a problem on the coast and it was possible to be generous.

“In 2012, despite the crisis, we made many reforms and maintenance works that increase the quality of the course: new drainage, improvement of the irrigation system, mounds on holes 2 and 11 of the Old Course, new tees on the New Course, extension of the distances from the white blocks, etc. In the clubhouse we finished a terrace for 75 diners, and new offices are being built, as well as a project for a gymnasium, new locker rooms, etc. On the machinery side, we expanded the park with five new acquisitions. In short, we do not stop, and all with a clear and ultimate goal: to have major national and international tournaments here and provide more and better service to customers and members,” says the director of Atalaya Golf. “Constant improvement is necessary in these turbulent times,” he remarks.

As far as occupancy is concerned, Andrés Sánchez is very satisfied with the way things are going at his course: “In 2012 we went up considerably compared to previous years. And this despite the 13 percent increase in VAT, which will reduce golf tourism in Spain”.

“The volume of players has increased on the coast and, of course, at Atalaya Golf. My prospects for the immediate future are optimistic,” he concludes.
