Minjee Lee has won her first major by winning the Evian Championship, played at the Evian Resort Golf Club (Evian-les-Bains, France). The Australian player beat South Korea’s Jeongeun Lee6 on the first playoff hole. American Yealimi Noh was third, one stroke ahead.
None of the three Spaniards in the tournament, Carlota Ciganda, Azahar Muñoz and Luna Sobrón made the cut.
The week for the champion included rounds of 68-69-65-64, the latter of -7 to reach -18 in the tournament, taking advantage of the fact that the Asian only managed to save par on the final day and was forced to play the playoff.
Lee signed an error-free card with seven birdies on holes 1, 7, 9, 14, 15, 16 and 18, while Lee6 made bogeys on 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9, as well as birdies on 1, 12, 16, 17 and 18. Minjee, then, came to the extra holes with a better feeling.
It was for this reason that on the first tee at the 18th she scored one stroke less and her rival two more, thus confirming her first victory in one of the five major tournaments of the women’s golf calendar.
In addition, it is the ninth win in her career as a professional (sixth on the LPGA Tour) and cut just over a year without celebrating a victory, since the 2020 Hugel-Air Premia LA Open.
With this triumph, Minjee Lee’s name is ratified among the group of favorites for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which will begin on August 4 in the women’s golf category.
His win at the Evian came with a check for $675,000.
