The alleged murderer of the young Spanish golfer Celia Barquín in the United States had told another person his intention to rape and kill a woman. This was revealed at a press conference by the local police in Ames, in the state of Iowa, where the murder of the Cantabrian golfer and the arrest of the alleged murderer, Collin Daniel Richards, took place.
The police spokesman, Major Geoff Huff, did not specify whether Barquín suffered some kind of sexual assault.
Huff explained that the alleged perpetrator had previously expressed to another person that he wanted to rape a woman. “Police found another individual who spoke of another subject (Richards) who lived in the woods who had communicated that he had a need to rape and kill a woman,” he related.
According to law enforcement, the suspect communicated those intentions to a person with whom he shared a “temporary residence,” a tent set up next to the golf course where Barquín was later killed.
Richards, 22 years old, the same age as Celia Barquín, is being held by police and charged with first-degree murder. At the time of the arrest, the suspect had scratches on his face that could imply a struggle, the police officer said.
said Barquin’s remains were found in a pond at Coldwater Golf Course with several stab wounds to the head, neck and torso. Police found at the scene a backpack that the alleged murderer had allegedly carried, with a knife with traces of blood on it. At the moment the authorities did not discover any relationship between the alleged killer and the young Spanish woman.
Born in Puente San Miguel, Barquín won in 2018 the Big 12 women’s golf tournament and was named female athlete of the year at Iowa State University, where she was studying Civil Engineering. Earlier this year, Barquín had also won the women’s individual European Championship.
